Plants With Large Leaves

Most plants with large leaves like the shade or part shade. They give a coarse texture to the garden and make the area seem smaller. They are a good contrast to the finer texture plants.

Chinese Mayapple and fruit (Podophyllum pleianthum)

Hosta Lily (Hosta cv. ) There are hundreds of cultivars of Hosta Lilies, most of them with large leaves.

Bergenia ciliata ‘Dumbo’

Indian Rhubarb (Darmera peltata). Native along rivers in Northern California. Likes water and part shade.

Japanese Coltsfoot, Fuki (Petasites japonicus) Flowers in February & March. The fruit is edible.

May Apple (Podophyllum peltatum) This plant is related to Barberry.

Japanese Aralia (Fatsia japonica)

Gold Dust Plant (Aucuba japonica ‘Variegata’)

Cardoon (Cynara cardunculus) is related to the artichoke. The midrib is edible – a French specialty.
