Peonies

Peonies are perennials that bloom in April and May and generally have large flowers. They like full sun and in hot climates, part shade.

Paeonia ‘Cora Louise’

Paeonia ‘Bartzella’

Paeonia tenuifolia is an expensive plant that I am trying to get to bloom. It is 4 years old; I paid $50 for it 4 years ago

Paeonia ‘Paul Friesen’

You can imagine my surprise when I found this peony in a peony catalog from a nursery in Minnesota because my oldest son’s name is Paul Friesen and I had nothing to do with naming it.

Paeonia lactiflora ‘Sarah Bernhardt’

This is an example of an herbaceous peony that dies clear to the ground in the fall and comes back in the spring.

A tree peony looses its leaves when it goes dormant but has woody stems that should not be pruned down because the flowers will develop from buds on these stems in the spring. Tree peonies can reach 5′-6′ while the herbaceous peonies grow to 3′-4′.

Paeonia ‘Pink Hawaii Coral’

Paeonia ‘Callie’s Memory’

Paeonia ‘Krinkled White’

Paeonia ‘Taiyo’
