Very few flowers are blooming in the winter but here are a few at Dawn Gardens that will add color to the landscape. All these photos were taken December – February:


Lenten Rose (Helleborus orientalis) blooms all winter with many different varieties available.
Bear’s-Foot Hellebore (Helleborus foetidus)
Euphorbia rigida. Many other Euphorbias bloom in the winter such as E. myrsinites, E. characias.
Euryops pectinatus blooms December until May and is deer resistant. Cut back in May/June.
Euryops pectinatus ‘Viridis’. Same as above but green foliage.

Salvia leucantha blooms until the temperature drops to 30. Then it will die back to the ground and come back in the spring.

Paper Bush (Edgeworthia chrysantha) sets buds in December and blooms in January – March.
Copper Canyon Daisy (Taygetes lemmonii). Very fragrant foliage. Blooms until temperature gets below 32 degrees then dies back to the ground.
Common Snowdrop (Galanthus nivalis) One of the earliest bulbs to bloom sometimes as early as December.



Cyclamen coum is a bulb that blooms in January through March.
Cyclamen hederifolium is another bulb that blooms with pink flowers (lighter than Cyclamen coum) in the fall.
Crocus chrysanthus is a bulb planted in the fall and blooms in the winter. Many varieties are available.

Iris reticulata is a miniature bulb iris blooming in February.

There are many Manzanitas that bloom in the Winter. This is Arctostaphylos ‘Austin Griffiths’
Witch Hazel (Hamamelis intermedia ‘Jelena’) blooms January through February.
Winter Daphne (Daphne odora) is very fragrant and blooms January through March and sometimes into April.

Mahonia bealei
Sweet Box (Sarcococca ruscifolia) has a tiny flower but it is very fragrant.
Dwarf Heather (Erica carnea) blooms through March and is a good 18″ groundcover.
Camellia japonica ‘Debutante’ is one of the first Camellias that bloom in the winter but many others follow through March and April.
