Progression of Daffodils

The Daffodil season starts in December at Dawn Gardens. All Daffodils are in the Narcissus genus and there are 13,000 varieties but Dawn Gardens has only about 100 of them. We planted about 50,000 daffodils in the past 20 years.

Narcissus ‘Paper White’ bloom in December thru January and a few into February. They are very fragrant and are good cut flowers.

Narcissus ‘Falconet’ is another early bloomer in January. It is also very fragrant.

Narcissus ‘February Gold’

This is the Butterfly Narcissus which has a flared cup and comes in different colors. Blooms in February and into March.

Narcissus ‘Ice Follies’ blooms in February into early March.

New Daffodil varieties:

I buy a lot of my bulbs from Color Blends which is a company that specializes in mixing several different varieties together. This mix of Daffodils is called “3D”. They are 3 different varieties that bloom at different times to give a long lasting bloom. The above picture was taken in February. Note the smaller sprouts which will bloom in early March. There is a third sequence of bloom at the end of March. Two months of color from 1 planting!
