The weather is warm and beautiful and it is a good time to work in the garden in the morning. Here are a few plants that you can use in the summer garden:
Globe Thistle (Echinops). Good dried flower.
Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis) This plant can also grow in bog conditions.
Lobelia gerardii ‘Vedrariensis’
Lobelia speciosa ‘Starship Deep Rose’
Coreopsis verticillata ‘Zagreb’
Coreopsis verticillata ‘Moonbeam’
Peruvian Lily (Alstroemeria)
Gloriosa Daisy (Rudbeckia hirta ‘Indian Summer’)
Rudbeckia fulgida sullivantii ‘Goldsturm’ looks a lot like Gloriosa Daisy but it spreads by rhizomes while the Gloriosa Daisy is a clumping perennial.
Blanket Flower (Gaillardia) Blooms summer thru fall if deadheaded.
Gaillardia before deadheading.
Deadheading is a chore; this took about an hour but will result in more flowers all summer.
Aster frikartii blooms mid to late summer.
Dahlia ‘Mystic Enchantment’ There are many varieties and colors of Dahlia from 1’ high to over 7’. They are bulbs so Daffodils and other winter bulbs can be planted among them.
Summer Phlox (Phlox paniculata).
