The Winter Garden

We don’t get much snow at Dawn Gardens since the elevation is only 1300′. But this year we got a little snow – just enough to bring winter beauty to the garden but not enough to cause damage.

Here are a couple of videos taken on golf cart rides through the garden:

Here are a couple of other videos showing the snow adding some sparkle to the central part of the gardens:

Some winter interest in the garden comes from the plants that produce fruit at that time:

Washington Thorn (Crataegus phaenopyrum)

Persimmon (Diospyros kaki)

European Cranberry Bush (Viburnum opulus)

Crabapple (Malus ‘Strawberry Parfait‘)

Laurustinus (Viburnum tinus)

A few plants have colored leaves due to the cold weather:

Creeping Mahonia (Mahonia repens)

Geranium sanguineum ‘Mac Frei’

Nandina domestica ‘Harbor Bay’

Dwarf Heavenly Bamboo (Nandina domestica ‘Nana’)

Multicolor Heather (Calluna vulgaris ‘Multicolor’)

Some plants go into winter dormancy later in December or January:

Feather Reed Grass (Calamagrostis acutiflora ‘Karl Forester’)

Dwarf Bamboo

Spiraea ‘Neon’

Spiraea thunbergii ‘Ogon’

Some of the early Daffodils are starting to bloom such as this ‘Paperwhite’:

Narcissus ‘Falconet’ blooms in January and February.

One of the other bulbs that bloom in the winter is Common Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis):

Many varieties of Hellebores bloom in the winter. This is Helleborus ‘Ivory Prince’:

Some plants have colorful twigs and stems in the winter because of the cold weather.

Acer x conspicuum ‘Phoenix’

There are many beautiful mushrooms coming up in the garden in the winter. Unfortunately I don’t know their names.
